چکیده

An optimal design strategy for spiral-wound membrane networks based on an approximate permeator model and a mixedinteger nonlinear programming (MINLP) solution strategy is proposed. A general permeator system superstructure is used to embed a very large number of possible network con®gurations. The superstructure allows the development of a MINLP design strategy which simultaneously optimizes the permeator con®guration and operating conditions to minimize an objective function which approximates the total annual process cost. Case studies for the separation of CO2/CH4 mixtures in natural gas treatment and enhanced oil recovery are presented. Permeator con®gurations are derived for different number of separation stages for both continuous and discrete membrane areas. The proposed approach provides an ef®cient methodology for the preliminary design of multi-stage membrane separation systems for binary gas mixtures. # 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Engineering of Membrane Gas Separation Processes: State of The Art and Prospects

Membrane processes are today one of the key technologies for industrial gas separations and show growing interest for future use in sustainable production systems. Besides materials development, dedicated engineering methods are of major importance for the rigorous and most efficient design of membrane units and systems. Starting from approaches based on simplified hypotheses developed in the 5...

Optimization-based design of spiral-wound membrane systems for 24 separations

A systematic design strategy for spiral-wound gas separation systems is studied using a recently proposed algebraic permeator model (Qi and Henson, Approximate modeling of spiral-wound gas permeators, J. Membrane Sci. 121 (1996) 11–24). Nonlinear programming (NLP) is used to determine operating conditions which satisfy the separation requirements while minimizing the annual process cost. The de...

Comparisons of Experimental and Simulated Velocity Fields in Membrane Module Spacers

Spacers are used in spiral wound and plate and frame membrane modules to create flow channels between adjacent membrane layers and mix fluid within the flow channel. Flow through the spacer has a significant beneficial impact on mixing and resulting mass transfer rates but is accompanied by an undesirable increase in pressure drop. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a common tool used to eva...

A mathematical model for designing optimal urban gas networks, an ant colony algorithm and a case study

Considering the high costs of the implementation and maintenance of gas distribution networks in urban areas, optimal design of such networks is vital. Today, urban gas networks are implemented within a tree structure. These networks receive gas from City Gate Stations (CGS) and deliver it to the consumers. This study presents a comprehensive model based on Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (...
